First, I apologize for not getting around to your story for so long. It's been almost a year, and I don't blame you for not responding to my DM on Twitter. But...

I read your story, Rag Doll, this evening. I also read all the reviews on Amazon. The story was polarizing among your readership. I dismissed complaints about brevity, language, and typos, as I was more interested in what people thought of the story itself. Some loved the twist, although they didn’t (or couldn't) explain it, and others thought that the ending was a kind of cop-out. “It’s only a dream.” I happen to like twist endings, if they're logical, and I don't mind dream cores, either. In fact, one of my favorite Brian De Palma films is Femme Fatale, which is brilliant, and laden with clues that I missed the first time around.

Needless to say, I’m a wee bit confused by the twist ending of your story. It would seem that Jeremy suffered an aneurysm while at the hotel in Murfreesboro, and that everything that happens afterwards, up to the hospital scene, is a comatose dream. The real question is what is fictional and what is real in the dream itself. Does Jeremy’s subconscious fancy Selena Montgomery as a singer/actress named Selena Montega because, in his mind, she’s the star in his life? Or is she actually Montega, using an alias during her visit to Arkansas?

It would seem that Rita, at the time the aneurysm occurred, had been having an affair with her high school sweetheart, Sheriff Jean-Paul McLeary (French-Irish?) for at least the past five months (she’s five months pregnant), and although Jeremy is apparently unaware he’s not the father of the unborn daughter, his relationship with his wife has been so poor that, in his dream, he has the sheriff inform him that his wife died in a bus accident, which is perhaps wishful thinking on a subconscious level. Of course, Jeremy has had an affair with Selena, so he’s not exactly innocent either.

As for the “rag doll”–the dead body of Selena–her dead body, along with the appearance of the "short, chubby man in tan shorts" with the video camera on the beach, seems to indicate that Jeremy is protective of Selena, and also fearful that harm might come her way. Dreams often play out one’s greatest fears as well as various other deep-felt feelings.

In any event, it would seem that no one actually dies in the story, and that it has a happy ending. Jeremy is free of his cheating wife, who is alive and well and married to the sheriff. Selena, whether she is truly a star or just a lady he met at the Ozark Suites, loves him. Jeremy’s beloved son, Todd, is in the custody of Jeremy’s parents. And Jeremy has awakened from his coma.

So even though I feel a "wee bit confused," I have at least tried to make sense of the story. I'd be happy to receive a comment from you with regard to my interpretation of the story. Of course, assuming I've basically figured it out, I couldn't spoil it in an Amazon review. But if I'm not far off base, I could maybe write a review in favor of the story.

I do think there are a couple of spots that need a minute bit of editing, but I won't mention them unless you want my input.

Overall, I liked the story, whether my understanding is totally accurate or not. At least I've taken the time to try to understand it, so I hope you appreciate that.

Again, sorry it took so long to get around to reading it. You may have forgotten, but I was born in Springfield, MO, not that far away from your digs in Arkansas (although I seem to remember that you are not from that part of the country originally). I also grew up "float tripping" the Buffalo River, and once also canoed the Mulberry. I've traversed Arkansas from the Missouri border to Texarkana, taking the mountainous scenic route through the back country towns.

I wish you luck with your literary career. I don't have any children of my own (my wife has some grandchildren, but their primary language is French), so I'm unlikely to purchase any of your children's books. I did like the adult aspect of "Rag Doll," by the way.

Take care.
